Let’s stop talking and show you the images we took during our stay at this luxurious hotel. Read more about our experience below. You can also read more about our other luxury getaways we experience under our honeymoon category.
History of Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel:
This hotel has always been known as the pink hotel in Cape Town. The hotel opened its doors on 6 March 1899, which makes this hotel one of the oldest in South-Africa. This is also one of the very first hotels in South-Africa with running cold and warm water. This luxury hotel has become a destination for celebrities and high profile individuals to relax including guests like Winston Churchill, John Lennon, Nelson Mandel and many more.
Deluxe Suite:
We stay in a lot of hotels and this room is one of our shortlisted favourites by far. The one-bedroom Deluxe Suite which we stayed in is spacious and has all the luxury touches one would expect from a five-star hotel. Hotel suites are getting smaller every time a new hotel is built. This is not the case here. You will have enough space to enjoy the luxury.
Where do we even start to explain? Let’s start in the bathroom, usually one of our favourite spaces. Wow. The bathroom is massive and there’s so much space to move around. You will find loads of marble in the bathroom from the luxurious shower, double basins and the deep bathtub. Attention to detail is definitely something you will find this hotel has a lot of. There are even little night lights from the bedroom to the bathroom.
The suite has a spacious lounge area where you can read a book or just relax on the sofas. Watch some television or review some of the videos you took on your honeymoon. There’s also a little breakfast corner with a table overlooking the lush gardens and signal hill. Perfect spot to have your breakfast if you order breakfast to your room instead of going down for breakfast. High ceilings make you feel like you live in a charming old house.
All the different spaces within the suite are separate with interleading doors. A spacious bedroom area with a lot of cupboard space, a small lounge area. There’s a comfortable King size bed with luxurious crisp white bedding on and the most comfortable cushions.
Breakfast:
Breakfast is served in the Oasis Bistro overlooking the lush gardens and pool area located next to the spa. Their breakfast is served from 6:30 am till 11:00 am. A breakfast fit for a Queen and King. They have one of the biggest breakfast spreads we have ever seen in a hotel in Cape Town. With a wide selection of fresh fruits, smoothies, juices, cold meats including biltong, dry wors etc.
That’s not all, they have a menu where you can choose from for your warm breakfast. Even more exciting is their pancake station where you have a wide variety of options. Pastries for days! That actually rimes yes. But there are loads of freshly baked pastry options available.
I had a Croque Madame – one of my favourite breakfast time treats. After eating their Croque Madame, I couldn’t find a hotel that does it better yet.
Gardens and Outdoor Spaces:
We love nature and the outdoors and that is something you will find here. Their gardens are exquisite. Green laws stretching throughout the entire property with loads of high old trees. The most beautiful outdoor spaces and art pieces you can walk around.
Swimming pools:
You have to treat yourself to a swim in their gorgeous swimming pools heated to comfortable temperature ideal for swimming. They have two large pools. One pool area is for all guests and the other pool only for adults for more private and relaxing time. Both swimming pool areas have relaxing pool beds and waiters where you can order drinks from.
Bar & Restaurant:
The Planet Bar is a modern mid-century bar where you can enjoy a late afternoon early evening drink. Decor elements used in the bar is decorated for absolute comfort and relaxation. You can also order some light meals from the bar if you are looking for something light to eat and not in the mood for a formal restaurant setup.
Dinner is served at the Lord Nelson Restaurant with Chef Rudi Liebenberg heading the kitchen. Located in the hotels original writing room. The oaktree panels are still the original wallpapers of Admiral Nelson. The restaurant is open from 18:30 pm till 22:30 pm and is closed on Sunday.
Iconic Afternoon Tea:
A visit to this iconic hotel is not complete without their famous afternoon tea. Their afternoon tea was so delicious that we had to skip dinner. We totally agree that their afternoon tea is definitely one of the best the country has to offer. Afternoon Tea is split up in two sessions. One session starting at 13:00 and ending at 15:00 and the second starting at 15:30 and ending at 17:30.
We booked the second time slot and sat outside on a lovely sunny Autumn afternoon. They have a lot of options on their high tea menu and with a very impressive list of different teas. Some of the options on their afternoon tea offering include Cheesecake, Turkish Delights, Milktart and much more sweet treats. You also get a selection of savoury treats to break the sweetness of the sweet treats. Last but not least to end of the afternoon tea with a lovely big scone. View their Afternoon Tea menu here.
